Is Iran safe to travel?

Although Iran might have a bad reputation in the media, this has mostly to do with the political situation. For travellers Iran is generally a safe country. There have hardly been any cases of violence against foreigners or bad behavior. Actually most people return home with new friends and all come back with stories about the Iranians being the kindest and most hospitable people in the world.

Entering Iran
To arrive on one of the international airports (Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashad, Tabriz, Ahvaz, Kermanshah) of Iran is generally a fast and hassle-free procedure. You are most likely to be warmly welcomed by the customs, your visa will be checked and off you!

Terrorism

Surprisingly maybe, but Iran managed to keep islamic extremist groups out of the country and thus remained one of the safest countries in the Middle East. The last decade there have been hardly any terrorist attacks making Iran even safer than most European destinations.

Petty crime

Just like all over the world, petty crime (robbery, pickpocketing) does exist in Iran. However, the rate of these offenses in Iran is much lower than most other destinations. Despite the relatively low rate of petty crimes in Iran, you should always pay attention to your belongings.

Health situation
Iran in general has a good medical service with hospitals all round the country. Due to the high level of education you will find well-trained doctors and medical staff in the hospitals. Only in rural areas obviously medical institutions are harder to find. And some medicines might be hard to find, due to the US boycot. In case you need medicines, bring extra supply from home.
